DEAR ST. ANDREW’S FAMILY,

The news reminds us that we live in a fallen world which is controlled by Satan. However, we can find comfort in what Jesus told Peter: “I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.” (Matthew 16:18). These are powerful words that we can keep in mind whenever we read the bad news or are facing yet another challenge in life.

SCRIPTURE THIS WEEK – Genesis 49:29-33Genesis 50:12-14

MESSAGE – One message in two parts.

When people die a great distance from where they were born and raised, sometimes the family goes to great lengths to return the body to their hometown for burial. That happens even if they’ve been gone for years or decades. The reason is often because it will be easier for family members to visit gravesites if ancestors are all in the same cemetery or at least the same town. Of course, this is not always the situation. Often, people leave their hometown for a reason and do not want their body to return.  It’s a mixed bag. Israel fell into the first category.

The brothers feared that perhaps Joseph would turn on them after Jacob’s death. Knowing human nature, this was certainly possible. They freely acknowledged all the evil which they did. What they worried about was justice. They feared righteous retribution. Joseph, with his high status and prestige in Egypt, was certainly capable of bringing this retribution. What you intended as harm, God turned it into good.
